the parties - 1
happy birthday charlie!!!
playing with a maraca that came from a bunch of junk that i had at my parents house that they happily brought me to deal with. charlie didn't think it was junk!
here is charlie at 1 year with lily.
just a boy and his dog.
at 1 year old charlie is:
*walking. which is especially cute when he is wearing his chucks or keens.
*eating us out of house and home. he chows down 3 big meals with at least 2 snacks a day. most of it finger food. his favorites are banana whole wheat pancakes, string cheese, pb & js on my bread, bananas, sweet potatoes, graham crackers and my chocolate chip cookies (not that he gets these all the time. he may get a bite here or there when we are eating them, but when they come out he starts getting really excited because he wants a bite).
*he loves waving at new people. it is adorable when we go to the hospital to visit bill he is constantly waving and smiling at people. for being such a serious baby he has really blossomed. sometimes he is a little suspicious and will check someone out for awhile before giving them the smile/wave combo.
*he is saying some words (a lot of these we would probably only recognize because they are not perfectly clear). he loves saying “uh oh”. says “dog”. just learned “ouch” this afternoon. repeats “dadada” constantly and with different inflection to mean different things. only says “momomoam” when he is angry.
*he is starting to make animal noises for a dog and monkey.
*enjoys playing catch with the basketball or throwing lilys ball.
*is very good about taking correction and obeying. he will often see something that is off limits (ie: bookshelf, tall vase with fake flowers) and point at it and start yelling “da dou da da da da dou!!!” as if he is saying “that is off limits! no one touch that!”
*loves lily. he likes crawling over her. picking up her lip to check out her teeth. laying on her dog bed (gross!), petting her, etc.
*he is very helpful. if i give him a piece of paper and tell him it is garbage he will go over to the trash can and throw it away. he puts toys back into their bins (not always picking up, but more of a game for him).
*still enjoys reading, but is more into speed reading these days. he will turn pages really fast and you only get about 1-2 words in. he loves this new book he got from becca. “baby’s 100 first words” is a book with pictures of something with the word under it. if you ask him to point at the baby he will most of the time point to the baby. same with the banana, ball, and dog (although i think he thinks cats and dogs are the same because the cat also often gets pointed to when asked to point to the dog).
*he weighs 23lbs & 9 oz. he is in the 60th percentile for height and weight and the 94th percentile for head circumference.
charlie we love you so much. we praise God for entrusting you to our care. you bring so much joy to those around you. our prayer for you is that you will come to love our Lord and Savior with all of your heart, soul and mind. happy birthday little.

unbelievable, 83 degrees
this past weekend, bill, charlie, my mom and i went to quarry hill to walk around. we also took charlie to a playground and let him swing. he loved it.
when my mom came she brought a few other toys for charlie - a swing, a lawn mower (picture to come) and bubbles. charlie has loved them all. here is charlie enjoying the swing. bill installed it under the deck.
i actually think lily likes the bubbles as much as charlie. she chases them and charlie giggles while she bites them.

78 degrees!!!
it is march 31st and today it was 78 degrees! not kidding, i kind of wanted to put the air on. this spring has been amazing. charlie and i enjoyed the day with spending time outside swinging, playing with rocks, and going for a walk with a friend. i can definitely get used to spring starting at the end of february!
another random piece of information is that this was charlie’s original due date last year. little did i know i had another 10 days to wait until we forced him out!

ready for the weekend
what a week! charlie and i have not had a lot of daddy/bill time and we are ready for the weekend. bill worked a ton this week. monday he was home at 9. tuesday he was on call so he was at the hospital (we did go have dinner with him in the cafeteria). wednesday we were able to see bill for a bit. he was post call and should have been home around noon, but instead got home around 4:30pm. thursday he was home after 9. tonight (friday) he walked in after 9. bill thought he would be able to get home to see charlie before his bedtime tonight, but when i paged him in the OR around 5:30 pm to check in the scrub tech said bill had said “i should be able to call you back soon”. then about 45 min later i received another call from the scrub tech saying that bill said “to just put charlie to bed because he would not be able to make it home in time”. i was so sad to hear that he was going to miss seeing charlie again! it breaks my heart to see how sad bill is when he misses seeing charlie. i also ache because i know how much charlie loves seeing his daddy.
but, i am excited that bill is off for the weekend (while he still has to go in and round on patients tomorrow morning, but then he is “off”). we have great friends coming to visit for the day tomorrow and then my mom is coming to see charlie and celebrate her birthday. i can’t wait for some much needed family time!

just one of the many many things we did today
we explored rocks. we touched, threw, licked (while only charlie did that), clanked, dropped and held rocks. in charlie’s current world, there is no longer a quiet day. quiet days are for babies. almost 1 year old babies want to explore – so explore is what we do.
just to give you an idea of what i mean by on the go…today, we had a meeting for sbs in the morning, played outside before lunch, ate lunch, put charlie down for his nap, he woke up and we watched the kitchen aid knead our bread dough, we went out for a quick 5 mile run, then came the fun part – we explored rocks, leaves, dirt, woodchips, grass, played catch with lily, went to petsmart to get lily’s nails trimmed, met daddy at the hospital for dinner, came home for bath and bedtime. whew!!! charlie is like my third arm. we are bffs.
loving the sunshine, the tree, and the rock.
picking up the rock.
throwing the rock down with force.
i am SO SO thankful of the time i get to spend with charlie. the weather has been beautiful here and perfect for seeing new places. yesterday, while we were downtown for an oil change, we walked up and down 2nd street and checked out the trees, light posts, saw mayo 1 the emergency helicopter coming in for a landing, hung out at some gardens and more. we stopped in caribou and had a snack and charlie basically turned sideways in his highchair with his back to me and waved and smiled at every person walking in and out of caribou. it is so fun to see charlie delight in seeing and learning new things. while it is sometimes frustrating that he doesn’t enjoy hanging out in our living room anymore playing with toys anymore - i am sure this is just for a season (or at least it has to be!) so i am enjoying his willingness to go anywhere and do anything. i think our vacation to san diego in mid-april will be perfect for his stage of life!
