mini schmitt christmas…oh and the nail polish incident

we went to hudson this past weekend for a schmitt christmas. charlie continues to rock his underwear so on our drive up I was asking him if he had to go and watching to see if he started to get antsy. about 10 minutes from hudson charlie started saying he was hot, acting agitated, etc. I realized he had to pee so we pulled over and charlie had his first experience peeing outside. thankfully bill was there to help him, but we were dying laughing at how funny it was he was standing up peeing.

while in hudson, claire was giggling like crazy over lily playing with her hand.

saturday evening bill and I had plans to go hang out with some of our friends. mary and elliot were going to hold the fort down once we got the girls to bed. while we were dealing with the girls charlie was watching CARS in bill’s parents room (they were out). usually charlie is really good and will just sit for a bit while we deal with e&c. but that night he was curious. all I heard were screams coming from tom & laura’s room so I went running in. I found charlie standing at the edge of their bed with what looked like a sharp object covered in blood. he was screaming as he continued to rub that sharp object near his eye and rub it around. the “blood” was all over. I grabbed him and started screaming for bill. at this point I found the other end of the nail polish bottle in his left hand. we were all freaking out for a bit because the bright red nail polish was in his eye so bill had to hold him under the faucet to flush his eye out. I was freaking out because of charlie, but also because the nail polish was on the comforter. after bill got his eye cleaned out we had to clean off his hair, face, hands, etc. it was quite the ordeal. after we calmed him down (and ourselves down – we were all shaking because we thought it was blood and was a horrible injury) we had a serious chat about opening things without asking a mom or dad. charlie had thought he was putting on mascara or eye shadow or something because he watches me do it (although I have explained that only moms wear makeup I think he thinks I am holding out on him). the funniest part of all was after we had this serious talk we walked him through some scenarios…

bill: charlie – if you see this jar and want to open it what do you do.

charlie: (in a very slow, carefully thought out voice) I open it and put it on my face! (all happy!)

bill: no. no. no. that is exactly what we are talking about. you need to ask a mom or dad before you can open anything. especially something you want to put on your face. lets try this again. charlie – if you see this little jar and want to open it what do you do?

charlie: (again in a very careful tone) I open it and put it in my eye! (proud that he knows where to put it)

bill: no, no, no…

bill then re-explained it and finally we got through to him. we have been reiterating this important point to him often. he is now at an age where he is getting more dangerous now because he wants/thinks he can do things adults do. we need to keep our eyes on him. sadly I don’t have any pictures from the incident. I was too worked up. also, I am so grateful for tom and laura’s grace! they are such great in laws and grandparents.

sunday morning bill and charlie went skiing at afton alps. on the way home bill stopped at starbucks for a hot chocolate. I thought it was so cute to see C with a bucks holiday cup. just another charlie smile.

bill’s grandma schmitt came out for a delicious lunch so we got her on the couch with the great grandkids.

it was not an easy task keeping the kids on the couch.

paul was a pro!

claire was in her element with the crowds. she was screaming and squealing all afternoon. ellie preferred to sit back a bit and assess everyone.
